Discovering the Charm Inside a Slow Stitch Kit

Let’s see what is inside!!

Upon opening the box, you are immediately drawn to a charming drawstring bag and a tissue-wrapped parcel tied with a navy bow. Each element is thoughtfully presented, building a sense of anticipation and excitement. As you untie the bow and gently unwrap the tissue, you reveal a gorgeous selection of fabrics, backing material and a charming handmade themed embellishment. The contents of the drawstring bag as it is tipped out reveals an array of lace, buttons, charms and embellishments, making the unboxing experience a delightful journey of its own.

Starting Out: How to Begin Your Slow Stitching

Start by laying out your pieces of fabric and experimenting with different arrangements until you find a composition that feels just right—much like creating a collage. I was particularly drawn to the dark blue fabric in my kit and found that pairing it with the bright orange fabric created a striking contrast, which became my starting point. As you can see from my pictures, the possibilities are endless, and these are just a few of the many combinations I explored! Remember, you don’t have to use every piece of fabric, and cutting the fabric into different shapes can add an extra layer of interest to your final creation.

Once pinned onto the backing material you are ready to start sewing the fabric on. Slow Stitch uses basic stitches like running, blanket and back stitch making it great for beginners.

Slow Stitch is a relaxing and mindful craft, so with Classic FM on the radio and a cup of tea by my side I started attaching my fabric using just a basic running stitch and got lost in the process of starting my first piece of textile art. Being able to just enjoy the stitching process and unwind in my own little world was lovely.

It’s recommended to press your work before moving on to the next part.

Embellishment time! Now's the moment to experiment with the various embellishments included in your kit—or feel free to add your own. The placement I initially chose for mine changed once the fabric was in place, but that's the beauty of this kit, you have complete creative freedom to decide where everything goes, making it truly your own unique piece of work.

Why You’ll Love It (and a Few Things to Consider)

  • Not great at sewing? No worries! Simply use a basic running stitch. It doesn't need to be perfect - embrace the imperfections. You can even vary the stitch size to add more character and interest to your work.

  • There are no rules, patterns, or instructions - no right or wrong way to create with this craft kit. You have complete freedom to choose what to include in your project, which stitches to use, and how to express your personal style. The result will be a one-of-a-kind piece, unique to you.

  • Remember, the beauty of slow stitching lies in its ability to help you relax, unwind, and simply enjoy the creative process. There's no rush—just let your imagination flow. Whether you prefer to create in a collage style, picture style, or with random shapes, the choice is yours. Make what you want and take pleasure in crafting something truly unique.

  • Also, slow stitching is incredibly portable, making it easy to take your project with you wherever you go. Whether you're out and about, travelling or on holiday, you can effortlessly bring your crafting along.

Final Thoughts: Reflecting on the Slow Stitch Experience

Overall, I found the Daisy Slow Stitch kit to be a fun and enjoyable project. However, I did encounter some difficulty with the needle provided—it was quite hard to get it through the fabric, which initially made the process less relaxing. However, I switched to one of my own embroidery needles which made it easier, and I was able to fully enjoy creating my textile piece. Another great aspect of this kit is its sustainability. The box is fully recyclable and the drawstring bag reusable, even the ribbon tying the kit can be used in other projects.

And now the finished piece ...................

Looking Ahead: What's Next on My Slow Stitch Journey?

The Watering Can Slow Stitch Kit caught my eye, so I had to try that kit next. This time, I swapped out the kit needle for an embroidery needle, which made the stitching much easier. With some music playing and a couple of cups of tea, I found myself far more relaxed and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Instead of a random design this time I had a go at creating a fun scene which I was really pleased with.  I’m already onto kit number 3 - The Cottage!

Top Tips:

1.      Embrace Blank Spaces: You don’t have to cover the entire background material - blank spaces can add a lot of character to your piece.

2.      Create Texture: Fraying the edges of the backing material or adding a border can introduce interesting textures and visual interest.

3.      Customize Your Thread: The enclosed thread consists of 6 strands which you can separate to adjust the thickness and achieve different effects.

4.      Explore Stitch Patterns: Don’t limit yourself to stitching around the fabric’s edges. Experiment with stitching across in rows, waves, or different directions - horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. Try incorporating circles or spirals for added intrigue.

5.      Relax and Enjoy: The essence of Slow Stitching is to unwind and immerse yourself in the creative process. Enjoy every moment of making and love creating something unique to you!

These are just some of the other Slow Stitch kits I currently stock.
